Website Feature: Events / Calendar

September 18, 2009 by Webmaster · Comments Off

Not only is there a new Calendar of Events where the events are displayed in a calendar and a listing, but there are areas on the sidebar (to the right) that will keep you informed of today’s events as well as upcoming events over the few weeks. The Calendar of Events and the Events listings on the side of the website will always have the latest data in them for local Quality Events.

Hovering your mouse pointer over an event may provide a little more detail than the title does. Additionally, the items are color coded to separate the various types of items – ASQ Baltimore, ASQ other, Certification, etc. And if you click on the title, your browser will take you to the relevant website.

This allows you to regularly keep up with local goings-on within the Quality Community in a more timely fashion than before.

If you have an event that is not listed and you wish it to be provided to the membership, please send it on to

Holiday – Labor Day

September 4, 2009 by Webmaster · Comments Off
Filed under: General Interest

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 7 in 2009).

The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the US military and US Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. Cleveland was also concerned that aligning a US labor holiday with existing international May Day celebrations would stir up negative emotions. All 50 U.S. states have made Labor Day a state holiday.

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations,” followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday.

Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parades. Speeches or political demonstrations are more low-key than May 1 Labour Day celebrations in most countries, although events held by labor organizations often feature political themes and appearances by candidates for office, especially in election years. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer recess.

Enjoy your holiday.

Message from the Chair

To: ASQ Baltimore (Section 502) Membership
From: Joan Richter, ASQ Baltimore (Section 502) Chair

Welcome to a new year for the Baltimore Section of ASQ. With your help, it should be a fantastic year.

First a few “thank you”s:

  • I would like to thank Eric Whichard for his leadership over the last two years. Eric plans to be active in the section in the future and has accepted the position as ASQ Region 5 Director. On behalf of the section, I would like to congratulate and wish him all the luck in his new position.
  • To the leadership committee members, thank you for your time, assistance, and energy. Without you, we would not be the Section that we are.
  • To the membership, thank you for being members of the Section. I am proud to say that we have four members who have been members for over fifty years.
  • Special thanks to Eric Finegan who is in the process of redesigning the website. Eric has done a great job. Look for changes over the next few months.

The 2009 – 2010 Dinner Meeting schedule has been posted on the website (www.asqbaltimore.org). In addition to the 2009 – 2010 Dinner meeting schedule, there is a lot of other information that you may find interesting (including Jobseekers, Education, Recertification, Exam schedule – just to name a few).

Regarding Dinner Meetings, I would like to address a comment from the dinner meeting surveys. A comment that we keep seeing is for “meetings to be held at other location”. Currently all meetings for this coming year have been scheduled for Snyder’s on Tuesdays. We have discussed the comment at the Board meeting, but most of the Board lives south of the city. If you know of a restaurant (with a separate meeting room and adequate parking like Snyder’s), please pass the name of the restaurant on to me or a member of the Board; otherwise, the meetings will be at Snyder’s. We are flexible and are willing to move the meetings around, however we need a viable location.

In addition to possible locations for meetings, if you can help us with any of the following, please feel free to contact myself or any of the Board members:

  • Speakers for Dinner meetings
  • Hosting a Breakfast meeting
  • Becoming a member of the Board (we have several positions open and can always use your help)

I am looking forward to being the Chair for the coming year and will appreciate any feedback. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks – jr

Jobseekers Website

September 1, 2009 by Webmaster · Comments Off
Filed under: Advancement, Website

If you have not already noticed, there have not only been changes made to the main ASQ Baltimore website, but also the JobSeekers website, now located at http://www.asqbaltimore.org/jobseekers/.

The new website now has a regularly maintained Calendar of Events (Career Fair/Job related) and a new feature where relevant articles regarding various issues surrounding the Job Search are provided for the membership to view. This is in addition to the Job Ads that are continued to be posted when available.

Additionally, the website now maintains a database listing of all of the links that used to be included in the Jobseekers Packet (including training, a large local company list, tips, news, etc).  These lists are now computerized and can be displayed in a variety of ways as needed.  Additionally, there have been a significant number of updates to the items on the list.  The website will also regularly check for broken links, so hopefully the list of links will remain fresh.

The Yahoo Groups that currently maintain the email list of ASQ Balt Jobseekers will continue to function for now, but a new, different subscription system may be implemented in the near future.

If you have any questions, please check out the site and/or email the Placement Chair at .

Thank you

Eric Finegan, Placement Chair
